Can Any AGA Be Converted to Electric?

One of the first questions we’re asked about electric AGA conversions is whether an existing cooker is suitable.

The short answer is: most traditional cast-iron AGAs can be converted, but not every cooker is automatically compatible with every conversion system.

The cooker’s age, design, oven configuration, condition and existing electrical supply must all be considered before recommending ElectricKit or eControl.

Which AGA Models Can Be Converted?

Electric conversion systems are available for many traditional:

  • Two-oven AGAs

  • Three-oven AGAs

  • Four-oven AGAs

  • Selected five-oven configurations

  • Oil-fired cookers

  • Gas-fired cookers

  • Former solid-fuel models

  • Older electric and 13-amp models

However, the conversion options and available features vary between models.

ElectricKit Classic, ElectricKit Advanced and eControl don’t necessarily offer identical compatibility. One system may be better suited to a particular age or configuration than another.

This is why the first stage should always be correctly identifying the cooker.

Is My AGA Too Old to Convert?

Age alone doesn’t necessarily prevent an AGA from being converted.

Many traditional cookers manufactured from 1941 onward can be suitable, including models originally designed for solid fuel. These older cookers can provide an excellent base because of their substantial cast-iron construction.

However, some particularly early models and uncommon configurations may not accept a standard conversion kit.

An inspection may also reveal age-related issues such as:

  • Deteriorated internal insulation

  • Worn oven barrels or components

  • Damaged castings

  • Poorly fitting doors

  • Previous alterations

  • Corrosion or contamination

  • Missing internal components

These issues don’t always prevent conversion, but additional refurbishment may be recommended.

Can an Oil AGA Be Converted?

Yes—many traditional oil-fired AGAs are suitable for electric conversion.

The oil burner and associated cooker components are removed or decommissioned as part of the conversion. The cooker is then heated using purpose-designed electric elements and controls.

Benefits can include:

  • No further oil deliveries for the cooker

  • Independent oven and hotplate control

  • No combustion within the cooker

  • No conventional combustion flue requirement

  • Less unwanted heat during warmer weather

  • Programmable operating times

The existing oil installation must be left in a safe condition. What happens to the tank and supply pipe will depend on whether they serve any other appliances.

Can a Gas AGA Be Converted?

Many natural-gas and LPG AGAs can also be converted to electricity.

The existing gas supply to the cooker must be safely disconnected by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. If the gas supply serves other appliances, it will normally remain in use but be properly terminated at the cooker connection.

Never disconnect or alter the gas supply yourself.

What About an AGA That Heats Water?

Some older AGAs incorporate a boiler or water-heating function.

Converting the cooker to electricity may affect or remove that function, so the home’s hot-water and heating arrangements must be assessed before work begins.

Alternative provision may be needed, such as:

  • A separate boiler

  • An immersion heater

  • An unvented or vented hot-water cylinder

  • Alterations to the existing heating system

Tell the engineer if your AGA currently heats water or radiators. This is essential information when assessing the project.

Does the Number of Ovens Matter?

Yes. The oven configuration determines which conversion kits, controls and optional upgrades are available.

Two-oven AGAs

Two-oven cookers are commonly converted and generally have several suitable options.

Three-oven AGAs

Conversion systems are available for many three-oven models, but the control arrangement and choice of system may be more limited.

Four-oven AGAs

Four-oven cookers can often be converted with separate control over the main ovens, hotplates and hot cupboard. Optional warming plates and higher-temperature oven upgrades may also be available.

Five-oven configurations

Compatibility depends on how the cooker and additional module are constructed. These require individual assessment before a system can be confirmed.

Is the Existing Electrical Supply Suitable?

An electric AGA conversion needs an adequate electrical supply.

The exact requirement depends on:

  • The conversion system

  • The number of ovens

  • The hotplate arrangement

  • Optional induction or radiant hobs

  • Other selected upgrades

  • The existing wiring and consumer unit

Some properties already have a suitable cooker circuit, while others require a new dedicated supply.

A qualified electrician should confirm the cable, protective device, isolation and available capacity before installation. Don’t assume that an existing 13-amp socket will be suitable for a full multi-zone conversion.

Does the Cooker Need to Be Refurbished First?

Not necessarily.

A cooker in good structural condition may only require the conversion itself. However, combining conversion with refurbishment can be worthwhile when the AGA has worn components or the kitchen is being renovated.

Additional work might include:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Fitting new door seals

  • Adjusting or rebuilding doors

  • Replacing internal components

  • Renewing chrome lids and handrails

  • Re-enamelling the front and doors

  • Raising or repositioning the cooker

Completing this work at the same time can reduce future disruption and give the cooker a more complete transformation.

Will the AGA Still Look Traditional?

Yes. One of the main advantages of converting an existing AGA is that its cast-iron exterior can usually be retained.

Most conversion equipment is fitted inside the cooker or behind its existing control door. Depending on the system, you may also choose a wall-mounted, worktop or handheld controller.

The cooker can therefore retain its traditional appearance while gaining independent heating zones, programmable controls and modern electrical operation.

How Do I Find Out Whether Mine Is Suitable?

In many cases, an initial assessment can be completed from photographs.

Send clear pictures showing:

  • The complete front of the cooker

  • The control or burner door

  • The hotplates and top

  • The number of oven doors

  • Any control panels or timers

  • The existing fuel connection

  • The data plate, if accessible

  • The surrounding kitchen and electrical outlet

We’ll also need your postcode, existing fuel type and details of any hot-water or heating function.

From this information, we can usually identify the cooker, discuss suitable systems and advise whether a site visit is required.
